I wrote this guide to help you make one good decision, correctly, the first time. A home sauna is not a small buy. It is a piece of electrical equipment that will live in your home for 15 to 25 years, so it is worth getting right. My goal here is a good outcome for you, not a sale for me. If you read this and decide a sauna is not for you, or that a different store fits you better, that is a fine result and I mean that.
So this guide is written straight. I explain every term in plain words. I tell you what the research actually says and where it stops. I flag the things sellers gloss over, and I tell you exactly what to ask before you hand anyone your money. The sales part is small and it is near the end, clearly marked. Everything before it is just the honest map.

Start here: the four decisions (about a two-minute read)
Every home-sauna purchase comes down to four choices. Get these four right and almost nothing else can go wrong. Here they are in plain language. The rest of the guide is just detail for people who want it.
1. What kind of heat do you want?
There are two main kinds, and they heat you in completely different ways.
- Traditional (Finnish) sauna heats the air, like an oven. The room gets very hot, around 150 to 195 degrees Fahrenheit, and you can pour water on hot stones to make a burst of steam. Old-school, high heat, that classic sauna feeling.
- Infrared sauna heats you directly, the way sunshine feels warm on your skin through a window even on a cool day. The air stays milder, roughly 110 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit, so it feels gentler while you still sweat.
- Hybrid is one cabin that does both, for households where two people want opposite things.
There is no "better" type. There is only the type that fits you. (Decision guide just below.)
2. Will it actually fit your space and your power?
A sauna needs three practical things:
- Room. It needs its exterior size plus a small air gap around it, not just the bench space inside. A cabin sold as "2-person" is bigger on the outside than you might guess.
- Power. Smaller infrared saunas often plug into a normal household outlet. Bigger infrared, all traditional, and all hybrids need a dedicated 240-volt circuit, which usually means hiring an electrician. This is the step people forget, so we cover it carefully.
- A little airflow. A sauna puts moisture into the room, so the space needs a window, a vent, or a bath fan. A sealed basement is the hardest case.
Measure and check your power before you fall in love with a model.
3. Who are you buying from?
This matters more than beginners expect. Buy from a manufacturer-direct seller or an authorized dealer, which is a store the maker has formally approved to sell its saunas and honor the warranty. Avoid "gray market" sellers (leftovers and unofficial imports) where the price looks slightly lower but the factory warranty is usually void and no one has to help you if something breaks.
One five-minute phone call to the manufacturer to confirm a store is authorized is the most valuable thing you can do before buying.
4. What does it truly cost to own?
The sticker price is not the whole picture. Budget for the honest full cost:
- The sauna itself, usually somewhere between about $2,500 and $8,500
- Free curbside freight delivery to your driveway (included on every model)
- An electrician if you need a 240-volt circuit, commonly $400 to $1,500 when your electrical panel already has room to spare
- A foundation for outdoor units, and maybe a small ventilation upgrade indoors
- Running cost, which is small: roughly $14 a month for a traditional sauna and about $4 to $5 a month for an infrared, at typical use
That is about 80 percent of what most people need. If you stop reading right here, you already know enough to shop without getting lost.

You can read this two ways, and both are fine.
- Skim it. Every chapter opens with a short line labeled The short version. Read only those and you will get the gist in a few minutes. Perfect if you already know roughly what you want.
- Go deep. Under each short version is the full explanation, with the real numbers, the plain-language definitions, and the exact questions to ask a seller. This is for the careful buyer who wants to understand every dollar and every spec before deciding.
Look for these little signposts throughout:
- Rule of thumb is the simple default that is right for most people.

The types of heat
How the heat reaches you, and what that heat does to your body.
Chapter 1Traditional vs Infrared vs Hybrid
A traditional sauna heats the air very hot, like an oven, and you can splash water on hot stones for steam. An infrared sauna keeps the air cooler and warms your body directly with heat panels, like sunshine through a window. A hybrid does both. Most first-time buyers are happiest with infrared because it is gentler and easy to use every day.

The two main styles, explained simply
Traditional sauna (also called Finnish sauna). Picture a wooden room with a heater in the corner. On top of that heater sit stones. The heater warms the stones and the stones warm the air, so the whole room gets hot, roughly 150 to 195 degrees Fahrenheit. That is hot enough that you start sweating within about 5 to 10 minutes of sitting down.
You can ladle a little water onto the hot stones to make a quick burst of steam and a wave of heat. In Finnish tradition this is called "loyly" (say it "LOO-loo"). It is the splash-and-sizzle moment people picture when they imagine a sauna.
This is the oldest style. People in Northern Europe have used saunas like this for more than 2,000 years.
- How hot: about 150 to 195 F. Think oven-warm air all around you.
- How much electricity it pulls: roughly 6 to 9 kilowatts (kW) for a cabin that seats 2 to 4 people. A kilowatt is just a measure of how much electricity a device draws. For comparison, a small space heater is about 1.5 kW, so a traditional sauna heater is like running four to six space heaters at once. That is why these almost always need special wiring (more in Chapter 6).
- Warm-up time: about 30 to 45 minutes before it is ready. You turn it on, then come back.
Infrared sauna. Instead of heating the whole room, an infrared sauna uses panels that give off infrared heat, which your skin absorbs directly. Here is the useful mental picture: on a cool day you can stand in a patch of sunlight coming through a window and feel warm, even though the air around you is not hot. Infrared works the same way. It warms you, not so much the air.
Because of that, the air in an infrared sauna stays much cooler, about 110 to 140 F. It feels milder and easier to sit in. But do not mistake milder for weaker: people still sweat about as much as in a traditional sauna. It just feels gentler getting there.
- How hot the air is: about 110 to 140 F. Warm, not oven-hot.
- How much electricity it pulls: roughly 1.5 to 2.5 kW for a 1 to 3 person unit. That is far less than a traditional sauna, in the range of one to two space heaters, which is why many infrared saunas can run on a normal household outlet.
- Warm-up time: about 10 to 15 minutes, quicker than traditional.
A note on infrared "sub-bands" (and a myth to ignore)
You will see infrared saunas advertised with terms like near, mid, and far infrared, or "full spectrum." Here is what that actually means, kept simple.
Infrared is a range of invisible heat energy. Scientists split that range into bands by wavelength, measured in micrometers (a micrometer is one millionth of a meter, far too small to see). Different sources define the bands slightly differently, and this matters because sauna marketing often uses cutoffs that do not match the official science.
The two recognized standards are:

Many sauna sellers instead use a looser "near / mid / far" split of their own (often around 0.76, 1.5, and 5.6 micrometers). Those numbers are an informal industry convention. They are not from ISO or CIE. So a panel labeled "far infrared" by a vendor may not line up with the official far-infrared band at all.
What is fair to say: near infrared and red light have the largest body of published research (for things like skin and wound healing). Far infrared is the most common type used in cabins. "Full spectrum" means the sauna produces all three bands; it costs more and needs better controls. None of this means one band gives you a specific medical result. More on that honest framing in Chapter 2.
Hybrid sauna. A hybrid puts both technologies in one cabin: infrared panels plus a traditional stone heater. You can use gentle infrared on some days and full traditional heat on others. This is the priciest option and pulls the most electricity, but it solves a real problem: two people under one roof who want completely different experiences.
Steam room (not a sauna, just so you know the difference). People sometimes confuse the two. A steam room is a sealed, tiled enclosure filled with 100 percent humidity from a separate steam generator, running cooler at about 110 to 120 F. It is wet, not dry, and is a different appliance entirely. This guide does not cover steam rooms.

Sitting in a sauna warms you up and gently works your heart a little, somewhat like light exercise. There is real research linking regular sauna use to better health, but it shows a connection, not a guarantee. No brand or infrared type is proven to give you a specific medical result. This is not medical advice.

Two different bodies of research
When people ask "is a sauna good for me," they are really drawing on two separate sets of studies.
The larger, older research is about traditional Finnish saunas. The most cited work comes from a long-running study in Eastern Finland known as the KIHD cohort. Researchers followed 2,315 middle-aged men (ages 42 to 60) for a median of about 20.7 years, tracking how often they used the sauna and what happened to their health over time.
The headline finding: men who used the sauna most often, 4 to 7 times a week, had notably lower rates of heart-related death and death from any cause, compared with men who went just once a week. In that most-frequent group, the risk of sudden cardiac death was about 63 percent lower and fatal cardiovascular disease about 50 percent lower than in the once-a-week group.
Two honest clarifications matter here:
- The typical sauna session in the study averaged about 15 minutes (the full range ran from a couple of minutes up to 90). You may see "19 minutes" quoted elsewhere; that is not the average session, it is the cutoff for the longest-session group, which showed the strongest association. The sauna heat in the study was at least about 174 F.
- This is an observation, not proof of cause. The researchers watched what happened; they did not run a controlled experiment. Something else about frequent sauna users could explain part of the effect. A commentary published alongside the 2015 study specifically cautioned that the link may not be causal. The finding has since been repeated in other groups, including a 2018 study that extended it to women, which strengthens the pattern. But "linked to" is not the same as "will do this for you."
The smaller, newer research is about infrared saunas. Studies here have looked at things like blood pressure, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia pain, and skin. The results are mixed but generally lean positive. This body of work is smaller and of more varied quality than the Finnish sauna research, so it supports cautious optimism, not firm promises.
Why heat might help at all
Both styles share a plausible mechanism, and it is worth understanding because it explains why the type of sauna matters less than simply using one.
When you sit in heat, your body has to work to cope with it. Your heart rate rises and your circulation ramps up, in a way researchers compare to moderate aerobic exercise. This mild, controlled stress triggers a recovery response in the body, including proteins that help protect and repair cells (called heat shock proteins), improved blood-vessel function, and effects on inflammation and the nervous system. This framing is mainstream and comes from the same researchers behind the Finnish studies.
The honest bottom line
A note on health and safety. This guide is educational and is not medical advice. Sauna heat raises your heart rate and can affect blood pressure. The most-worried-about number in the infrared market, put in plain perspective.
Chapter 3EMF explained simply
Every electrical appliance gives off a faint magnetic field called EMF. In a sauna it is worth understanding but easy to keep in perspective. The field drops off fast as you move away from the source, so what matters is the reading where you actually sit, not right at the panel. Ask the seller for a measurement at bench level and a third-party test report.

What EMF even is
EMF stands for electromagnetic field. Any device that uses electricity, your fridge, your hair dryer, your laptop, gives off a low-frequency version of this. The specific kind that comes from ordinary household power is called extremely low frequency, or ELF, and it is measured in units called milligauss (mG). You do not need to memorize any of that. You just need to know it exists and how to think about it.
The reason it comes up with saunas is that infrared saunas have heating panels close to where you sit, and some buyers want reassurance those panels are low-emission.
The distance rule (the one thing that matters most)
Here is the single most useful fact about EMF: it fades very quickly with distance. Think of a campfire. Standing right next to it, the heat is strong. Take two steps back and it is much gentler. EMF behaves like that, only it fades even faster.
So the number that matters is not the reading pressed against the panel. It is the reading where your body actually sits, a few inches to a foot or more away. As an illustration, a panel reading 5 mG at its surface can read under 1 mG just 6 inches away, and under 0.1 mG at 18 inches. (Those are example figures, not a fixed spec; the exact drop-off depends on the panel.) The takeaway is simple: a few inches of distance cuts your exposure dramatically.
The standards, told straight
You will see sellers cite various "standards." Here is what they actually are, so you are not misled.
- The ICNIRP guideline: about 2,000 mG. ICNIRP is an independent scientific commission whose safety reference levels many countries adopt. Its 2010 guideline for everyday public exposure to household-frequency magnetic fields is 200 microtesla, which works out to about 2,000 mG. Note this is a whole-body exposure reference, not a limit for a single device or seat.
- The "Swedish" 2 to 3 mG figure: a monitor-era convention, not a building code. You will often see a claim that a "Swedish Building Standard" recommends staying under 3 mG. That is a misattribution. There is no such building standard. The real number traces back to Sweden's TCO and MPR certifications for computer monitors from decades ago, where the limit was about 2 mG measured 30 centimeters from a display. It is a voluntary equipment-emission convention, often rounded to 3 mG in the sauna trade. It is a reasonable low-emission target to ask a seller to meet, but it is not a regulatory or building requirement.
- In the United States, there is no federal EMF limit at all. The EPA states plainly there are no federal standards limiting these power-frequency fields. OSHA has no such exposure standard, and the FDA sets no sauna EMF limit. This is precisely why sellers cite ICNIRP or the old Swedish monitor conventions: there is no US rule to point to.
How to read the marketing labels
- "Low EMF" usually means roughly under 3 mG at the panel surface. This is the most common claim.
- "Ultra-low" or "near-zero EMF" usually means around 1 mG or below, achieved with special internal wiring that cancels out the fields.
- No EMF number published? Assume it is above 3 mG and ask.
Indoors, outdoors, and where it will sit
Whether your sauna lives inside or out changes how it is built and where it can safely go.
Chapter 4Indoor vs Outdoor
Indoor saunas are not weatherproof, and putting one outside, even under a roof, is the single most common mistake that voids the warranty. If there is any chance your sauna will live outdoors, buy an outdoor-rated model from the start. It costs a bit more and is worth it.

Why this is its own decision
Indoor and outdoor saunas look similar but are built very differently. Getting this wrong is expensive, so it deserves its own chapter.
Indoor saunas are built for a dry, protected room. Typically they have a single-wall cabin of about one inch tongue-and-groove cedar or hemlock, no weather sealing, and they plug into a 120-volt or 240-volt outlet. They are not built to survive rain, snow, or outdoor humidity.
Outdoor saunas (often the classic barrel shape) are built tougher: thicker walls of about 1.5 to 2 inches, sealed weather-resistant finishes, a shingled or metal roof, and outdoor-rated fasteners that will not rust. They need a level, load-bearing foundation and their own weatherproof electrical run.
The mistake that costs people their warranty
Chapter 5Space, Clearance, and Foundation (Where It Sits)
A sauna needs more room than its inside size suggests, because you measure by the outside of the box plus a small air gap on every side. Most home floors hold one fine. If it goes outdoors, it needs a hard, level base like a concrete pad or a paver patio, never bare dirt or grass.

First, a word about how saunas are sized
Saunas are named by how many people fit on the benches inside, not by how much floor they take up. A "2-person" sauna is not two feet wide. It is the bench space that seats two.
So the label tells you the inside. What you actually have to fit in your home is the outside. Always plan around the exterior dimensions plus a little breathing room, not the person count.
Rough outside sizes to picture it:
- A "2-person" infrared cabin is about 47 to 51 inches wide on the outside. Think a bit wider than a standard interior door lying flat.
- A "3-person" traditional cabin runs about 60 to 75 inches per side. Think a small closet or a large shower footprint.
The clearances (the empty space it needs around it)
A sauna gets warm on the outside too, and it needs airflow so the wood and electronics stay healthy. So you leave a small gap around it. "Clearance" just means empty space you keep clear.
Here is the full list. Keep this handy when you measure your room:
- 2 inches of air gap on all sides. The cabin should not be shoved tight against a wall. Two inches lets air move and heat escape.
- 6 inches in front of the door. Room to open the door and step out comfortably.
- 12 inches of space above the cabin. Assembled cabins stand about 75 to 80 inches tall. In a room with a standard 8-foot (96-inch) ceiling, that leaves you the headroom you need. Measure your ceiling first.
- 24 inches around the whole outside for outdoor barrel saunas. The extra room lets snow and rain shed off and keeps the wood from sitting against anything wet.
Will your floor hold it?
Yes, almost certainly, if it sits on the ground floor.
A sauna loaded with two adults inside weighs somewhere around 600 to 1,400 pounds total. That sounds like a lot, but it is spread across the floor, and a normal ground-level floor handles it without a thought. It is comparable to a few people standing together, or a full bathtub.
Two situations deserve a second look:
- Upstairs or on a second story. Building codes assume a typical home floor supports about 40 pounds per square foot of "live load" (live load means people and movable things, not the house itself). A ground floor on a slab is never a worry. A second-story installation is usually fine too, but it is worth a quick check with a contractor if the sauna is large.
- Traditional heaters add stones. The rocks piled on a traditional heater add roughly 60 to 100 pounds on their own. Still not a problem on a normal floor, just something to know.
If it goes outside: the foundation
An outdoor sauna cannot sit on grass, dirt, or loose gravel. The ground shifts and stays damp, and within a season or two the cabin racks out of square, doors stop closing, and the manufacturer will decline a warranty claim because the base was never right.
Any one of these three is a proper base:
- A poured concrete pad, about 4 inches thick, reinforced, over a gravel bed.
- A paver patio set on compacted gravel with edge restraint (the border that keeps the pavers from spreading).
- A pressure-treated wood deck rated to carry the sauna's weight and footprint.
Power and airflow
The two hookups people underestimate: the electrical circuit and the room's ventilation.
Chapter 6Electrical and the 240-Volt Question (The Biggest Surprise Cost)
Small saunas plug into a normal wall outlet, no electrician needed. Bigger ones need a dedicated high-power circuit installed by a licensed electrician, which usually runs $400 to $1,500. The one to watch for is an older electrical panel that is already full, because upgrading it is the single most expensive and most surprising line item. Find that out before you buy, not after.

This is the chapter that catches people off guard, so read it even if you skip others. The good news: once you know your model's power needs and take a quick look at your electrical panel, there are no more surprises.
Volts, amps, kilowatts, in plain words
You do not need to be an electrician. You need three ideas.
- Volts are the "pressure" of the electricity. Regular household outlets are 120 volts. Big appliances like an electric dryer or oven use 240 volts, double the pressure.
- Amps are the "flow rate," how much electricity moves at once. A circuit is rated for a maximum amps, protected by a breaker.
- Kilowatts (kW) are simply how much power the sauna pulls while running. Think of it like the difference between a desk lamp and a space heater. A lamp sips power; a space heater gulps it. A small infrared sauna is closer to the lamp end; a big traditional heater is firmly at the space-heater end.
That is the whole vocabulary. Now the two paths.
Path 1: The plug-and-play sauna (120 volts)
Most 1-person and many 2-person infrared saunas draw under 1.8 kW. They run on an ordinary 120-volt household outlet, the same kind your toaster uses. If you already have a dedicated outlet where the sauna will go, you plug it in. No electrician. This is the lowest-friction, lowest-cost way into sauna ownership.
Path 2: The hardwired sauna (240 volts)
Bigger saunas need real power. This includes:
- Larger infrared cabins (roughly 3 to 4 person).
- All traditional heaters above 4.5 kW.
- All hybrids.
These run on 240 volts, the same class of circuit as your electric range or dryer. That means:
- A 30-amp or 40-amp double-pole breaker (the wide, two-slot kind).
- A new run of heavy copper wire, 10-gauge or 8-gauge, from your electrical panel to the sauna.
- Either a hardwired connection or a dedicated 240-volt outlet.
A licensed electrician is nearly always required. Expect roughly $400 to $1,500 for the job. Where you land in that range depends on how far the sauna is from your panel, how long the wire run is, and local labor rates.
The one that ambushes people: panel capacity
Your electrical panel is the gray box with all the breakers. It has a limited total capacity, measured in amps.
- A 200-amp panel (common in newer homes) usually has plenty of headroom to add a sauna circuit. You are fine.
- A 100-amp panel (common in older homes) may already be close to full. Adding a 30-amp sauna circuit can push it over. Your electrician runs a quick "load calculation" (adding up what your home already draws) to check. Sometimes the answer is that you need a panel upgrade.
A panel upgrade is a separate, larger job, typically $1,200 to $2,500 or more, and higher in some regions. It is not included in that $400 to $1,500 wiring estimate. It is the single biggest and most surprising cost a sauna buyer can hit.
Your buyer checklist (bring this to the seller and to your electrician)
Copy these down. Getting written answers to all five removes every electrical surprise:
- The model's kW and voltage. Exactly how much power, and 120V or 240V.
- The required circuit amperage. 15, 20, 30, or 40 amp.
- Cord or hardwire. Does it plug in, or does it wire directly?
- Distance from your panel to the sauna's spot. Longer runs cost more.
- A written estimate from a licensed electrician, made against the install manual. Give the electrician the manufacturer's electrical page so the quote is real, not a guess.
Chapter 7Ventilation and Moisture (Where Saunas Quietly Fail, and the Easy Fix)
A sauna puts warm, damp air into the room around it. In a sealed space with no way for that moisture to escape, it can eventually cause mold over the years. The fix is simple and cheap: a bathroom-style exhaust fan vented outside, plus an openable window or vent. Plan it before you buy, not after.

This chapter is short, but it saves the most heartache per word. Ventilation problems do not show up on day one. They show up two or three years later, and by then they are expensive.
Why this matters
When a sauna runs, it warms the air and adds moisture, and some of that escapes into the room it sits in. Infrared saunas release less than traditional ones, but neither is a sealed box. So the room around the sauna matters as much as the sauna itself.
If that room can breathe, the moisture leaves and nothing happens. If that room is sealed tight, the moisture has nowhere to go. Over years, humidity can build to the point where untreated drywall or wood framing starts to grow mold. That is the quiet failure. It is completely preventable.
Indoor: give the room a way to breathe
The ideal indoor spot for a sauna has one of these already:
- A bathroom-style exhaust fan.
- A window you can open.
- A passive vent to the outside.
The worst spot is a sealed basement room with none of the above. That is exactly where moisture has nowhere to go.
The sauna's own vents
Separate from the room, the cabin itself should have venting so air circulates inside it. Look for at least two vents:
- A low intake vent, near the heater or floor, to draw fresh air in.
- A high exhaust vent, up top, to let used air out.
Both should be adjustable so you can control the airflow. A cabin with no venting heats poorly and traps stale air.
Outdoor: keep the door away from the weather
